Madrid - Tire recycling plant

Sacyr's tire recycling plant in Madrid

The client

SACYR S.A. is a Spanish infrastructure operator and developer company based in Madrid, employing over 15 thousand people and with 4.5 billion euros in revenue.

The problem

Sacyr operates Europe's largest tire recycling plant near Madrid. The plant receives approximately 20,000 tons of used tires annually (3,000 truck and 17,000 car), 40% of which are granulated, producing rubber-based products such as flooring for kindergartens and parks, and the rest is used as fuel in cement factories. To ensure the quality of these products, they must be free of any metal residues. To achieve this, tires are processed through a two-step cutting process using distinct machines. However, the steel teeth from the first machine occasionally pass through to the second, causing damage and halting the operation

The solution

We installed four cameras operating 24/7 on the first machine, utilizing AI to detect metal pieces in real time. The cameras capture images every second, which are then sent to a backend system for rapid processing. Using a YOLO-based model, the system identifies potential metal objects, sending an alert to the machine's IoT system to stop the operation immediately if any metal teeth are detected.
