My main research interest is to develop novel infrared and electronic measurement technologies for bio-medical applications, including skin characterisation, trans-dermal drug diffusion and medical diagnosis. To date, I have successfully supervised 10 PhD students, got 2 UK patent applications, and got nearly £1M research generated incomes. I have published more than 100 papers in peer-reviewed journals and conference proceedings. I have also published two books. I am a grant proposal reviewer for BBSRC and EPSRC, book proposal reviewer for Pearson, an editorial committee member of the new Cosmetics open-access journal, a journal reviewer for more than 10 journals, including the prestige Journal of Biomedical Optics, International Journal of Pharmaceutics and Physiology and International Journal of Cosmetic Science etc. I have contributed to REF (Research Excellent Framework) 2004, 2008 and 2014. My research has been featured as a research impact case study in REF 2014. Apart from research, I also teach at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels. I have created three new courses and more than 10 new modules. I also have won the university outstanding supervisor award in 2014. I am also the co-founder and director of Biox Systems Ltd, a successful university spin-out company that designed and manufactured – AquaFlux and Epsilon, novel instruments for water vapour flux density and permittivity imaging measurements, which have been used in more than 200 organizations worldwide, including leading cosmetic companies such as Unilever, P&G, L’Oreal, Philips, GSK, Johnson & Johnson, and Pfizer etc.
